At a moment when a lot of alleged high culture is just self-congratulation, Kelley found poetry in places that most people were happy to ignore. He deployed awkwardness, sentimentality, and crudity with rigor, wit and no condescension. It wasn't to demonstrate his cleverness, but to express a terrible ache.
