« Lionel Shriver's Big Brother | Main | NT Live's King Lear »

Jeff Abell

I've long known the beautiful "Meditation," and years ago read the novel by Anatole France that inspired the libretto. I can't quite figure out why Massenet seemed to feel he needed to save all his best music for the last act. Or it just took him an act and a half to get warmed up, because after the meditation he finally seems to be cooking on all his burners.

And the novel is much, much more engaging than the opera.
